Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions

Repack (year-round):
The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distributes 1.7 million pounds of groceries a month, a feat that could never be accomplished without the hard work of hundreds of volunteers. If you are in search of a fun group project for your organization, or looking to spend some extra time volunteering individually, repack is the place for you. Volunteers will assist our repack team in inspecting; sorting and repacking donated, as well as purchased groceries in our warehouse. Projects vary daily depending on our inventory. Groups can schedule for a whole or half-day volunteer event and while you’re here, we will even show you around our base of operations, a 94,000 sq. ft. ‘Green Facility’. Be sure to ask for details when you contact us! Contact the Volunteer Coordinator for more information at (412) 460-3663, ext. 281.

Produce to People (year-round):

Help Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distribute fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as other grocery items, at our weekly Saturday distributions. By attending a direct distribution, you will experience a powerful, introspective glimpse into the food insecurity that exists in our very own Pittsburgh communities. This eye-opening volunteer experience places volunteers in a rewarding position as they spend the morning helping the Food Bank directly fight hunger. Together we will distribute between 15,000 and 23,000 pounds of food directly to families in need. Volunteers are needed to help us unload product from trucks, set up the distribution line, distribute items to the recipients and help elderly individuals carry their groceries. It is a volunteer experience that you won’t want to miss. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator for more information at (412) 460-3663, ext. 281.

Gleaning (July - November):
Enjoy a few hours on a working farm while helping feed hungry people in our region. Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank needs your help to glean, or harvest, fresh fruits and vegetables at local family farms. Gleans last about 3 hours, and take place weekdays, Saturdays, and weekday evenings from July through November. The Food Bank provides training, tools, water and snacks- all you need is transportation to the farm.

We glean at farms near Cranberry, Mars, Wexford, Evans City, Gibsonia, Butler, Beaver Falls, Bridgeville, and even Indiana County-so there's sure to be a farm convenient for you! We welcome individuals, families with children ages 7+, or groups ages 12+.

Ready to get out in the fields? Complete this form to add yourself to the glean volunteer list and we'll send you alerts when the crops are ready to be picked. For more information, contact the Gleaning Coordinator, at (412) 460-3663 ext 214.
